Gold Coast Council Closes Currumbin Creek Swimming Spot After Sewage Spill

by Anna

Gold Coast locals and visitors are being urged to avoid swimming in Currumbin Creek following a significant sewage spill earlier this week. The Gold Coast City Council announced that the spill, which occurred Tuesday night, is believed to have been caused by construction work on the M1, where a sewer main on Duringan Street was damaged.

While workers acted promptly to contain the leak, the sewage still flowed into the creek, prompting the council to place warning signs in the area to alert the public.

A council spokesperson stated that initial inspections on Thursday showed that creek conditions appeared normal. However, authorities have still advised against swimming in the creek until further testing is completed.

“In an abundance of caution, the City recommends avoiding swimming in Currumbin Creek downstream from the spill site until test results are received tomorrow. We will continue to provide updates to the community,” the spokesperson said.

This incident follows a similar event last year, when Tallebudgera Creek was closed after a major sewage leak traced back to a burst pipe at the Eleanora wastewater treatment plant in Palm Beach. Untreated waste had spilled over bushland and into the creek, raising concerns about water safety.
