Hyliion has secured a $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to advance a project aimed at reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas sector. The funding will support the installation of up to 2 megawatts (MW) of Karno generators, which convert wellhead gas into sustainable, near-zero emissions electricity.
The total project is valued at $8.4 million, combining both federal and non-federal investments. Hyliion will collaborate with oil and gas partners to showcase the Karno generator’s ability to operate on unprocessed gas.
The grant is part of the DOE’s $850 million methane emissions reduction program, which focuses on enhancing methane monitoring and mitigation in the energy industry. Hyliion’s CEO, Thomas Healy, emphasized the generator’s potential to turn waste gas into valuable energy, helping combat emissions in the oil and gas sector.
The Karno generator is a fuel-agnostic system that can run on over 20 fuel types and is designed for low-maintenance operation in harsh environments like oil fields. The grant is subject to final approval and agreement with the DOE.
