Residents of the Lawton Gardens condominiums in Manchester are facing hefty electricity bills after enduring a month-long power outage. The extended disruption, which began around Thanksgiving, forced residents to rely on a diesel-powered generator, resulting in thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses and the loss of refrigerated food.
The power outage initially left the complex without electricity for several days, prompting the property manager to arrange for a private company to provide a temporary generator. The property manager personally covered the upfront costs using his own credit card. However, the daily operation of the diesel generator came at a significant cost, amounting to roughly $600 per day—totaling over $3,000 by the time power was finally restored Thursday.
Residents are now uncertain whether their insurance will cover the unexpected costs. “Insurance may or may not cover it,” said Bob Soucy, a resident of the complex. “We’re in limbo.”
Eversource restored power to the complex on Thursday after completing repairs, and private electricians finalized the connections to both buildings in the development. Despite the return of electricity, residents are left grappling with the financial aftermath of the prolonged outage.
