A section of the M8 near Braehead Shopping Centre in Glasgow has reopened after being closed for several hours due to a raw sewage spill. The westbound off-slip at junction 25A was shut down from approximately 08:30 until 16:45 after the carriageway was flooded with contaminated water.
One road user shared on social media that their car had been “completely engulfed” by the sewage. Traffic Scotland confirmed that the issue was caused by a “fractured sewage pipe” and that the contaminated water had now been cleared from the area.
“The off-slip has now reopened at Junction 25A to Braehead,” Traffic Scotland posted on social media. “The contaminated water has now been cleared, and traffic is able to pass.”
Earlier in the day, Scottish Water reported that it was addressing a burst sewer main that had caused “localised flooding.” The utility company said in a statement that its operatives had isolated the damaged main to prevent further flooding in the roadway and surrounding areas.
Shoppers at Braehead also reported that the strong smell of sewage was noticeable from within the shopping centre’s car park.
