The United States has unveiled the largest solar generator on the planet: the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System (ISEGS). Located in California’s Mojave Desert, this massive facility uses 500,000 mirrors to harness solar power, marking a significant leap toward clean, renewable energy.
Innovative Solar Technology: Heliostats and Power Towers
ISEGS, which began operations in December 2013, spans 3,500 acres and consists of three solar thermal power plants. The facility uses 173,500 heliostats—large mirrors that concentrate sunlight onto power tower receivers. Developed by BrightSource Energy and built by Bechtel, the system has a combined capacity of 386 megawatts. Power Plant 1 generates 120 megawatts with 53,500 heliostats, while the other two plants produce 133 megawatts each with 60,000 heliostats.
Generating Power with Steam Turbines
ISEGS converts solar energy into electricity through high-tech steam turbines. The heliostats focus sunlight on receivers, generating heat that turns water into steam. This steam powers Rankine-cycle reheat turbines, which supply energy to the grid, providing power to around 140,000 homes. To ensure continuous operation, natural gas-fired boilers are used during low sunlight periods, blending solar and traditional energy sources.
Sustainability and Efficiency in Harsh Conditions
ISEGS is designed with sustainability in mind. It uses dry cooling systems to minimize water consumption, limiting annual use to 100 acre-feet—vital in the arid Mojave Desert. The layout of the solar field is also designed to preserve local vegetation, reflecting the facility’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
A Landmark in Renewable Energy
Since its launch, ISEGS has nearly doubled the U.S. commercial solar thermal energy output, setting a new benchmark for renewable energy projects. As Tom Doyle, president of NRG Energy, puts it, “Ivanpah proves that utility-scale solar is not just possible but beneficial for both the economy and energy production.”
