Telangana Power Officials Warn Against Flying Kites Near Electrical Lines

by Anna

Officials from the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) have issued a safety warning, urging the public to avoid flying kites near electrical lines and transformers. They stressed that this practice could lead to accidents and power disruptions.

In a statement, TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Musharraf Faruqui advised kite flyers to stay clear of all overhead wires and distribution transformers (DTRs), particularly power lines. He outlined several safety guidelines, including flying kites in open areas during dry weather, staying away from buildings, streets, and highways, and avoiding electrical poles and towers.

Additionally, Faruqui emphasized the importance of using only cotton, linen, or nylon strings for kite flying, while warning against the use of metallic threads or metal-reinforced strings. These materials, such as the traditional “manja,” are good conductors of electricity and pose a serious risk of electric shock if they come into contact with power lines.

“Always use dry kite string and never wire. Keep a safe distance from utility poles, supporting wires, and transformers. Never climb electrical equipment, and be cautious with children while flying kites,” he said. “Do not let children touch snapped or broken electrical conductors.”
