San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has issued a warning to customers, stating that power shutoffs may occur again in high-risk areas of San Diego County due to the return of strong winds. These winds heighten the potential for wildfires, prompting the utility company to take preventative action to reduce fire risks.
Last week, SDG&E cut power to thousands of customers as Santa Ana Winds swept through Southern California, contributing to multiple wildfires that have destroyed thousands of homes and claimed 16 lives in Los Angeles. As forecasters predict more dangerous weather conditions, the threat of wildfires remains high, and the utility is preparing for another round of public safety power shutoffs.
As of Sunday afternoon, nearly 55,000 customers were at risk of power outages, which may last until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for San Diego’s inland and mountain communities, including the Palomar and Descanso Ranger Districts of the Cleveland National Forest, from Monday afternoon through Wednesday evening.
In light of the ongoing fire threat, the San Diego County Office of Education closed schools last week and will continue to provide updates on potential school closures via their social media platform, X.
To ensure safety during this critical time, firefighters recommend residents prepare emergency “GO Bags” in case evacuation becomes necessary. Additionally, residents should ensure their phones are charged, register for AlertSanDiego, and download the Genasys Protect and SD Emergency apps to receive updates on evacuations in their area.
