Bürkert’s SAW Technology Flowmeter Prevents Biofilm in WFI Loops

by Anna

Bürkert has introduced an innovative flowmeter, the Type 8098 FLOWave, utilizing Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) technology for high-precision flow measurement and biofilm prevention in Water for Injection (WFI) loops, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry.

The FLOWave flowmeter uses contactless SAW technology to measure real-time volume flow rate, cumulative volume, flow velocity, and temperature, independent of fluid conductivity or bubbles. This ensures precise monitoring to maintain optimal flow conditions, which is essential in preventing biofilm formation.

Achieving accuracy to 0.4% and repeatability to 0.2%, the FLOWave flowmeter guarantees that minimum flow rates and sufficient turbulence are maintained, reducing the risk of biofilm buildup. It also optimizes pump efficiency by preventing unnecessary pump speed adjustments, reducing energy consumption and wear.

FLOWave’s contactless design eliminates contamination risks from bacterial accumulation on sensors, and its straight-through measuring tube prevents dead zones, reducing the buildup of particles and microorganisms. The flowmeter is constructed from durable 316L stainless steel and is compatible with CIP/SIP processes for easy cleaning.

Additionally, the compact design simplifies installation and maintenance, and its compatibility with modern digital communication protocols ensures easy integration into existing systems. With FDA certification and compliance with ASME BPE standards, the FLOWave flowmeter meets the highest pharmaceutical requirements for hygienic and reliable operation.
