Express Global Logistics (EXG), a member of the Worldwide Project Consortium (WWPC) in India, successfully completed the transportation of a massive Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) and its key components, including blades, nacelle, and hub. The operation required a combination of ocean freight and specialized ground transportation to ensure timely and secure delivery.
Project Components
Blades:
-
- Length: 81 meters
- Width: 5.2 meters
- Height: 3.5 meters
Nacelle:
-
- Weight: 114.5 tons
Hub:
-
- Weight: 41 tons
Given the enormous size and fragility of the components, the transport process involved precise planning and the use of specialized equipment.
Transport Journey
The journey began with the careful loading of the blades at a port in eastern China, following strict safety protocols to prevent any movement during transit. The blades were delivered to a port on India’s west coast within the agreed timeline, where inland transportation took over.
Inland Transportation Challenges
Transporting the large components across India presented several challenges, particularly in navigating narrow roads and sharp turns. EXG used the following specialized equipment for the task:
- 2 mechanical trailers
- 2 sets of hydraulic axles
- 3 extendable trailers
This equipment was specifically chosen to handle the oversized load while ensuring safe and stable transport.
Key Challenges and Solutions
Complex Turns and Civil Works: Sharp turns and narrow roads required extensive civil works, including road widening and barrier removal. EXG worked with local authorities to make these adjustments efficiently.
Signboard Shifting: Several roadside signboards had to be temporarily relocated to accommodate the large blades. These efforts were coordinated carefully to minimize traffic disruption.
Police Escort: EXG coordinated with local police to provide an escort for the transport vehicles. This ensured smooth navigation and effective traffic management along critical stretches of the journey.
Execution Excellence
The successful transport of the WTG components demonstrated EXG’s expertise in managing oversized cargo. Despite the complex challenges, the project was completed with meticulous planning, highlighting EXG’s commitment to operational excellence and customer satisfaction.
