TasWater Starts Selfs Point STP Upgrade with New Pipeline

by Anna

TasWater has commenced work on a new 4.3km underground pipeline, a critical component of its Selfs Point Sewer Transformation Project. The pipeline will transport 12ML of sewage daily from Macquarie Point to the expanded Selfs Point Sewage Treatment Plant.

Tim Cubit, Acting General Manager of Project Delivery at TasWater, noted that Hobart commuters would notice increased activity around Lower Domain Road in the coming months, with trucks transporting materials and equipment for trenching works. While minor traffic delays are expected, major disruptions are not anticipated.

Construction of the pipeline will begin in the next two weeks and continue until April 2025. The project will decommission the existing Macquarie Point Sewage Treatment Plant and replace it with a modern pump station. The Selfs Point plant will also be upgraded to improve Hobart’s sewerage network and environmental outcomes.

TasWater, in partnership with the Tasmanian Government, is investing $314 million in the project. The State Government is contributing $224 million, while TasWater is funding $90 million for the pipeline relocation and an additional $66 million for upgrades to the Selfs Point site.

The project is expected to generate 3,420 jobs and $1.1 billion in economic activity. Once complete, the upgraded plant will treat 25ML of wastewater daily and reduce nitrogen and phosphorus levels entering the Derwent River by 50%. TasWater is investing $1.9 billion in its network over the next five years to support Tasmania’s growth and environmental sustainability.
