UK Power Networks has launched the UK’s first smart substation in Maidstone, marking a significant step in its Constellation trial aimed at enhancing power infrastructure and accelerating the UK’s transition to Net Zero carbon emissions.
The new substation features advanced AI and machine learning technology, enabling real-time analysis of power flows and dynamic energy distribution. This innovation could unlock up to 50% more capacity on the grid, facilitating greater integration of renewable energy sources and supporting the UK’s decarbonisation goals.
Luca Grella, Head of Innovation at UK Power Networks, described the smart substation as a “groundbreaking innovation” that will not only improve service for energy-generating customers but also make the network more resilient and future-ready for a decarbonised energy system.
The Maidstone substation is already supporting Allington Energy from Waste, the first generator to connect to the system. FCC Environment, which operates the Allington facility, welcomed the development as a key step in supporting the broader UK decarbonisation effort.
As part of the Constellation trial, UK Power Networks plans to deploy five more smart substations across South East England. These stations aim to dynamically manage power flows, unlock additional grid capacity, and boost the integration of renewable energy at scale.
