Concerns Raised Over Expansion of Sewage Works in Denbighshire

by Anna

Fears have emerged regarding the expansion of sewage works in Tremeirchion, Denbighshire, with locals concerned about unpleasant smells and potential harm to wildlife. Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water has applied for planning permission to create an Integrated Constructed Treatment Wetland at the site, which would include two underground septic tanks, three wetland cells with planting, new internal access roads, fencing, and landscaping.

While the council officers have deemed the plans acceptable, the proposal has faced opposition from several local residents and environmental groups. Christopher Wynne, from Wynne Construction, has raised concerns about potential odour pollution and its impact on the quality of life for nearby residents. In a letter to the council, Wynne expressed fears that the smells, particularly in warm weather, could lead to a decline in local living standards and reduce property values.

Wynne also highlighted the potential long-term damage to local wildlife habitats and the risk of pollution affecting nearby watercourses. He argues that these risks have not been adequately addressed in the planning application.

A local resident also expressed concerns about the odour from the proposed wetland. However, the council’s public protection department, which was consulted on the development, stated that they did not believe an odour impact assessment was necessary for this type of project and raised no objections to the plans. The proposal is set to be discussed at a planning committee meeting next week at Denbighshire’s Ruthin County Hall.
