Rolls-Royce has launched the upgraded mtu Series 1600 platform, offering up to 40 percent more power than its predecessor. The new 50 Hertz version follows the 60 Hertz model introduced in late 2023.
Tobias Ostermaier, President of Rolls-Royce Power Systems’ Stationary Power Solutions division, highlighted the advancements in the mtu Series 1600 engine, emphasizing its enhanced performance, flexibility, lifecycle costs, and sustainability. “The Series 1600 will strengthen our position in the power generation market, supporting global energy needs,” he said.
The gensets, with electrical outputs ranging from 590 to 996 kVA, are ideal for a variety of applications, including data centers, healthcare facilities, commercial buildings, and hybrid or microgrid installations.
Orders for the upgraded gensets have already been placed across the US and Europe for diverse emergency power needs, including data centers, hospitals, entertainment venues, and ski resorts. Additionally, Rolls-Royce will offer the engines and cooling systems separately to independent OEMs for integration into their genset designs. Here are the key features:
The 12V1600 Gx1 engine now offers the highest power density in its class, with a 40 percent increase in power, delivering 996 kWm. It is designed for superior load acceptance and reliability, even in harsh environmental conditions.
The new Series 1600 gensets are compatible with synthetic diesel fuels like Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), reducing CO2 emissions by up to 90%. HVO also offers better storage stability and cleaner combustion compared to traditional diesel.
The engines meet Performance Class G3 and exceed ISO 8528 Power Ratings, making them a perfect fit for high-performance data centers, particularly those in the edge data center market, with load factors up to 100 percent.
The upgraded mtu Series 1600 generator sets demonstrate Rolls-Royce’s commitment to advancing power generation technology, offering higher efficiency, sustainability, and versatility for various applications. With the ability to reduce CO2 emissions and provide reliable power in challenging environments, these gensets are poised to meet the growing demands of industries like data centers and emergency power solutions. As Rolls-Royce continues to innovate, the mtu Series 1600 positions the company to support a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
