Danfoss Launches Economizer to Enhance Efficiency of Cold Climate Heat Pumps

by Anna

Danfoss has introduced an innovative economizer designed to improve the performance of cold climate heat pumps, supporting the transition to electric heating. This new solution includes a brazed plate heat exchanger and an additional expansion device, which enhances the efficiency of vapor injection compressors like the Danfoss PSH.

Cold climate heat pumps typically face challenges due to high compression ratios, leading to higher energy consumption. The economizer alleviates this by reducing the workload on the compressor, enhancing heat transfer, and improving overall energy efficiency. It subcools the refrigerant before it enters the expansion valve, boosting the heat absorption capacity in the evaporator and improving heating performance in low temperatures.

The economizer uses a high-efficiency brazed plate heat exchanger with bi-metal connections, making installation easier and more cost-effective. It also offers flexible configurations with either electronic or thermostatic expansion valves, allowing precise liquid injection for a variety of heat pump applications, from residential to commercial.

This innovation addresses concerns about heat pump effectiveness in colder climates, helping drive the adoption of electric heating solutions in North America. “The economizer brings us closer to full electrification in HVAC,” said Jeff Staub, sales director at Danfoss Climate Solutions.
