Hyosung Heavy Industries has successfully proven the reliability of its carbon-free hydrogen engine generator in extreme weather conditions, solidifying its position in the clean hydrogen power generation industry.
On February 21, the company announced that its 1MW hydrogen engine generator, the world’s first commercially available model, had completed 1,400 hours of continuous operation under harsh winter conditions. This accomplishment follows its earlier success in summer operations, demonstrating the generator’s ability to maintain stable output and efficiency despite fluctuating temperatures.
The hydrogen engine generator, which operates entirely on hydrogen, was installed at Hyosung Chemical’s Yongyeon plant in Ulsan in April 2024 and has been in operation since then.
In addition to its performance in extreme temperatures, the generator has passed rigorous safety inspections by the Korea Gas Safety Corporation and the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation, receiving approval for commercial operation and further validating its reliability.
While many companies worldwide are still in the testing phase of developing hydrogen engine generators, Hyosung Heavy Industries stands out as the only company to have successfully carried out real-world demonstrations.
The generator produces zero carbon emissions when running exclusively on hydrogen, offering a solution to the intermittency challenges faced by renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. It can also be easily started and stopped, making it a valuable asset in supporting the government’s carbon reduction goals.
A representative from Hyosung Heavy Industries remarked, “With year-round operational reliability now confirmed for our hydrogen engine generator, a key technology for achieving carbon neutrality, we are committed to refining our hydrogen combustion technology to further strengthen our position in the eco-friendly energy market.”
