ABB has secured a major order to equip 30 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers with its permanent magnet shaft generator system. The order, from shipbuilders in China and South Korea, includes 18 vessels from China and 12 from South Korea, with deliveries scheduled between 2028 and 2030.
This cutting-edge technology aims to improve fuel efficiency by replacing traditional auxiliary engines, which are often fuel-intensive. By eliminating the need to start up high-speed engines during voyages, the permanent magnet shaft generator enhances fuel economy. ABB estimates that this system can reduce fuel costs by up to 4% compared to conventional solutions. When paired with ABB’s advanced ACS880 Converter and Control System, fuel efficiency can increase by an additional 1%.
The compact design of the system eliminates the excitation unit, leading to up to 20% savings in space and weight. These improvements also contribute to reduced installation and maintenance costs, offering ship owners a competitive edge while supporting the International Maritime Organization’s decarbonization goals.
