Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more common, but there’s an emerging issue: many EVs are being totaled by insurance companies, even when their high-voltage battery packs remain perfectly intact. Instead of discarding these perfectly usable batteries, what if they could be repurposed for other uses?
This is the innovative concept behind Fellten’s Charge Qube, a product designed to reuse EV battery packs in a sustainable way. The Charge Qube is essentially half of a 20-foot shipping container, packed with entire EV battery packs. It can serve as a large off-grid generator, on-grid energy helper, or even a fleet charging station, offering a flexible and customizable energy solution.
Versatility in Battery Use and Power Exporting
One of the standout features of the Charge Qube is its compatibility with various battery types, not just those from high-mileage or damaged Tesla Model 3s. It can house batteries from brands like BYD, Volkswagen, and others. This flexibility means that batteries from a range of EVs can be put to good use instead of being discarded.
In addition to the versatile battery options, the Charge Qube offers various configurations for exporting power. Depending on the unit’s size, it can support single-phase and three-phase inputs and outputs and can accommodate up to six battery packs in its small version. For larger operations, it can house up to 36 Level 2 chargers—a perfect setup for EV fleets.
Powering Up with Speed and Sustainability
The small version of the Charge Qube, filled with around 450 kilowatt-hours of energy from Model 3 batteries, can function as a DC fast charger, delivering up to 240 kilowatts of power. This means it can quickly charge EVs and simultaneously serve other energy needs.
The Charge Qube can absorb energy from the grid when electricity prices are low, storing that energy and releasing it when prices are high—helping to balance demand and cut costs. Additionally, it can charge batteries using solar power, offering a green energy solution. In the event of a power outage, the Charge Qube can also function as a backup generator, keeping the lights on and providing power for vehicles.
