Wenlock Spring, a premium water brand based in Shropshire, is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability by focusing on reducing carbon emissions, increasing renewable energy usage, and promoting sustainable packaging. Over the past year, the company has made significant strides in improving its environmental impact while maintaining its premium water offerings.
The company has installed 741 solar panels, reducing its carbon emissions by 175 tonnes, equivalent to planting over 10,000 trees. In addition, its on-site biomass boilers, which provide hot water, have reduced energy consumption by 24%. Wenlock Spring has also adopted regenerative agriculture practices, including growing 25 acres of Miscanthus grass. This fast-growing crop fuels the biomass boilers and helps sequester 1,000 tonnes of CO2 in the soil while supporting biodiversity.
To further enhance energy efficiency, Wenlock Spring implemented an advanced heat recovery system that captures waste heat from air compressors to heat water, saving 22% of energy. The company has also upgraded its machinery, replacing three old compressors with a single high-efficiency compressor to reduce energy consumption.
Sustainable packaging is another key focus for Wenlock Spring. The company was one of the first in the UK to introduce recycled PET (rPET) bottles and has pioneered lighter-weight glass bottles made with 40% recycled glass. Wenlock Spring’s aluminium cans are fully recyclable, offering an eco-friendly alternative for consumers. The company is determined to continue leading the charge in sustainable packaging and is focused on further innovations in this area.
Looking ahead, Wenlock Spring plans to expand its sustainability initiatives, including increasing its use of solar power, planting more hedgerows to create wildlife corridors, and investing in technologies to reduce environmental impact. The company also aims to expand its presence in the hospitality, education, and travel sectors, where it sees tremendous growth potential.
