Danish wind energy leader Vestas has announced the addition of a new wind farm proposal to its expanding Australian portfolio. The Captains Mountain Wind Farm, with a potential capacity of up to 252 megawatts, is planned near the Millmerran coal-fired power station in Queensland’s Toowoomba Region.
The proposed project, valued at approximately $700 million, involves the installation of up to 35 wind turbines, which would be connected to the existing transmission network near the Millmerran coal plant. The wind farm would be situated on land primarily used for cattle grazing, animal husbandry, and other rural activities, according to Vestas’ referral documents.
This week, the project was submitted for federal environmental assessment and is expected to be classified as a controlled action under the EPBC Act, which will require a more detailed environmental review. Vestas anticipates further opportunities for public comment as additional documentation becomes available.
Vestas, which already has 7 gigawatts (GW) of wind farm capacity in Australia, currently has eight wind projects under construction, including the Winterbourne wind farm in New South Wales, a 730 MW development that is also supported by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. The Captains Mountain Wind Farm is part of Vestas’ ongoing expansion of renewable energy projects in the region.
