FSi Promat has achieved a 52.5% reduction in carbon emissions at its Measham factory by upgrading to a demand-responsive air compressor system. The company replaced its old fixed-speed compressor, which operated continuously regardless of need, with a variable-speed model that only runs when compressed air is required. This switch has significantly reduced energy consumption and associated carbon emissions.
The new compressor is an essential part of FSi Promat’s production process, supplying high-pressure compressed air to machinery used for mixing sealants and coatings. The change to a variable-speed model is part of the company’s broader sustainability efforts, which also include reducing low-risk wastewater generation by approximately 550,000 litres per year, installing sensor-based lighting, and transitioning to renewable energy sources. Furthermore, FSi Promat has restructured shift patterns, resulting in a 30% reduction in energy use by shortening machinery run times.
Tim Roe, engineering and facilities manager, emphasized the simplicity and effectiveness of the upgrade: “Switching to a variable-speed air compressor was a clear decision. It significantly reduced energy consumption without impacting production,” he said. The company remains committed to exploring additional ways to improve energy efficiency and support sustainability.
