The West Cork islands of Bere, Sherkin, and Cape Clear are set to receive a total of €122,491 in funding under the Clár programme. A significant portion of this, nearly €80,000, will be allocated to Sherkin Island for the introduction of a hybrid electric bus.
Mike O’Connor, owner of the North Shore Hostel on Sherkin Island, welcomed the €78,651 grant, emphasizing its potential to improve local transport and support the island’s transition to sustainable energy. He highlighted that the new electric bus would replace an older, less eco-friendly service, helping Sherkin move closer to its goal of sustainability.
“Sherkin is a sustainable energy community, and we’re proud to be one of just 30 islands across Europe chosen for a major clean energy initiative,” O’Connor said. “This includes Bere Island and Inishbofin, and the new electric bus is an important part of that transition. It will enable us to provide clean energy-powered transport, replacing the current bus, which relies on non-sustainable energy sources.”
In addition to Sherkin’s transport upgrade, Cape Clear Island will receive €20,925 for a new sports floor in the community hall, which is expected to benefit locals of all ages. Meanwhile, Bere Island has been granted €22,915 for a generator to support the community centre.
Bernie Orpen, acting project coordinator with the Bere Island Projects Group CLG, described the generator funding as a “game-changer” for the island. “In recent years, we’ve faced long power outages, and this funding will help ensure that we can keep essential services running. The generator will provide power for charging devices, lighting, heating, water, and broadband, ensuring that islanders can access shower and cooking facilities, and enabling those working remotely to continue without disruption.”
Orpen praised the Department for its ongoing support of island communities, adding, “This investment underscores their commitment to maintaining the vitality of our island communities, and it is very much appreciated.”
The funding, announced as part of the Clár programme, aims to support rural and island communities in West Cork, fostering local development and sustainability.
