Vertiv Unveils Next-Gen Liebert EFC Free Cooling Unit

by Anna

Vertiv, a global leader in digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, has launched an upgraded version of its thermal management product portfolio with the introduction of the next-generation Vertiv Liebert EFC free cooling unit. Designed to meet stringent environmental standards, this solution is ideal for data center applications such as colocation and cloud services. The Liebert EFC is now available across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) with capacities ranging from 150 to 450 kW.

The Liebert EFC combines indirect air-to-air heat exchange and evaporative cooling in one unit. With a patented polymer heat exchanger and low-GWP inverter-driven compressor technology, the unit offers up to 19% higher annual efficiency compared to previous models, achieving a partial Power Usage Effectiveness (pPUE) as low as 1.05.

A key feature of the Liebert EFC is its flexibility. Users can take advantage of the free cooling mode by toggling control features that reduce the consumption of critical resources such as power or water. This flexibility enables data center operators to minimize their environmental impact while ensuring continuous cooling. For full water independence, the unit can operate with a direct expansion (DX) back-up and a remote condenser, supplying cooling capacity without any water usage.

Sam Bainborough, Vice President of Thermal Business EMEA at Vertiv, emphasized, “As businesses prioritize sustainability, there is growing demand for cooling solutions that reduce resource consumption while offering operational flexibility and resilience. The Liebert EFC, with its patented technology, addresses these needs, enabling customers to maximize the use of free cooling while harnessing the natural power of evaporation.”

The Liebert EFC complies with global regulations, including the EU F-Gas regulation and IPCC AR4. It is engineered for scalability, easy maintenance, and long-term durability. Its polymer design improves corrosion resistance and allows for a broader range of water qualities, outperforming traditional aluminum heat exchangers. At the heart of this innovative solution is Vertiv™ Liebert® iCOM™ control algorithms, which manage automatic transitions between optimal working modes, ensuring seamless operation of the units for enhanced reliability and cooling continuity.
