Nanni Industries: Redefining Superyacht Generators

by Anna

Superyacht generators are the unsung heroes of luxury yachts, powering everything from lights to climate control. As the industry shifts toward sustainability and enhanced comfort, the demand for quieter, cleaner, and more efficient generators has grown. Nanni Industries, a marine engine manufacturer with over 73 years of experience, is meeting this challenge with innovations like ultra-quiet generators and methanol-powered solutions.

Nanni has long been a leader in marine propulsion and generators, primarily serving naval and commercial sectors. Four years ago, the company expanded into the superyacht market, quickly gaining recognition for its genset range designed for yachts up to 50 meters. The company has since forged partnerships with top shipyards such as Benetti, Sanlorenzo, and The Italian Sea Group, securing its place in the competitive luxury yacht industry.

One of Nanni’s standout innovations is its “Soundless” technology, which reduces noise levels by 10 dB. This feature was first tested on a Sanlorenzo 72 yacht during a refit, where it significantly lowered onboard noise, earning praise from the captain. The technology works by redesigning the generator’s air intake and exhaust systems for smoother airflow and replacing traditional foam insulation with a more advanced, solid sound-absorbing material. The result is a quieter, more comfortable cruising experience for yacht owners and guests.

With superyachts becoming larger and power demands increasing, Nanni’s generators are designed to handle more electricity consumption while minimizing noise—a critical aspect of modern yachting. As electricity needs have surged, so too has the need for quieter, more efficient power sources.

In addition to noise reduction, Nanni is also pioneering clean energy solutions. The company has teamed up with Sanlorenzo and MAN Engines to develop a methanol-powered generator under the Life Mystic project. This initiative, which reduces emissions by 70%, will be implemented on the third unit of Sanlorenzo’s 50X-Space series, set for delivery in 2027.

The development of the methanol-powered generator wasn’t without challenges. Adapting a combustion engine to a new injection system required significant innovation, but Nanni’s existing expertise in methanol applications for commercial shipping helped overcome these hurdles. The new system allows the engine to seamlessly switch between methanol and diesel, enhancing energy efficiency without sacrificing performance.

Nanni’s dual-fuel system represents a major leap in superyacht technology, offering a more sustainable solution without compromising the power needed for high-end yachts. By focusing on both noise reduction and environmental sustainability, Nanni Industries is setting new standards for superyacht generators, ensuring a quieter, cleaner, and more efficient future for the industry.
