Harbinger is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) technology with a new extended-range EV (EREV) platform, set to be available for a variety of vehicles, including delivery trucks, emergency vehicles, and RVs. This move builds on the company’s collaboration with Thor, which introduced an electric RV with a 250-mile range. Starting next year, Harbinger’s turnkey EREV chassis will offer medium-duty trucks the same long-range benefits, making them more versatile and fuel-efficient.
Addressing Fleet Needs with EREV Technology
Harbinger’s EREV platform aims to solve the challenges faced by fleet operators with unpredictable schedules, who are currently underserved by existing EV trucks. These vehicles are typically optimized for predictable, consistent duty cycles, making them less suitable for operations with irregular demands. The EREV system, offering up to 500 miles of range and significantly better fuel economy than traditional gas-powered trucks, promises to fill this gap.
EREV Powertrain and Key Features
The platform features an 800-volt electrical architecture with two battery options—140 kWh or 175 kWh—installed between the frame rails. A rear axle with a permanent magnet motor delivers 440 horsepower and up to 1,140 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. Additionally, a small 1.4-liter, 67-horsepower four-cylinder engine serves as a generator to recharge the batteries while the vehicle is in motion. This allows for longer trips without compromising on electric performance.
Unlike a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), where the engine can power the wheels, the Harbinger’s engine is solely dedicated to generating electricity. This distinction categorizes it as an EREV, or extended-range EV, which primarily operates as an electric vehicle but uses the onboard generator for longer trips.
Fast Charging and Upfitter-Friendly Design
Harbinger’s EREV chassis can recharge up to 80% in just one hour, thanks to its Panasonic-supplied batteries. When ready for upfitting, the chassis will come fully equipped with essential systems such as the motor, engine, batteries, steering, and brakes. This will allow upfitters to quickly attach their custom bodies and get the vehicle on the road.
While Harbinger will begin production at its Los Angeles-area factory next year, the company is already accepting pre-orders for the new hybrid medium-duty chassis.
