In a strategic move to bolster the security of critical data communication in railway systems, Westermo Network Technologies and Eviden have announced a collaborative partnership. The initiative aims to develop cutting-edge security solutions utilizing crypto-agile operational technology and IoT devices.
Westermo’s latest generation of Ethernet switches takes center stage in this collaboration, offering robust hardware support designed to safeguard critical data. This hardware support enables the secure exchange of sensitive information through end-to-end encryption, particularly vital in highly interconnected systems where data security is paramount. These solutions are specifically designed to adapt swiftly to evolving cyber threats, offering a robust defense mechanism and safeguarding the investments of critical infrastructure operators.
The partnership’s maiden project, set to commence in Germany, will see Westermo and Eviden jointly developing crypto-agile switch technology. Managed industrial gigabit Ethernet switches from Westermo’s Lynx 3510 series will be outfitted with pluggable hardware security modules (HSM) from Eviden. Further enhancing security, specially designed crypto software will be installed on micro-SD memory cards, adding an additional layer of protection to the switches. This proactive approach not only ensures immediate security enhancement but also primes the switches for emerging cyber threat scenarios. Rail industry certification for this pioneering product is anticipated to be achieved by the conclusion of 2023.
