Sheffield Forgemasters has recently welcomed 24 new apprentices for the year 2023, marking an important step in their ongoing development as they make significant strides towards establishing one of the world’s most advanced manufacturing facilities.
These successful applicants have joined the esteemed Ministry of Defence (MoD)-owned company during a particularly exciting period. They are set to embark on an award-winning apprenticeship program, where they will receive fully-funded training, work toward professional qualifications, and receive compensation for their efforts.
The apprentices at Sheffield Forgemasters are commencing their journeys at various levels, with two fortunate individuals pursuing degree apprenticeships. This strategic move aligns with the company’s overarching plan to make substantial investments in new equipment and plant facilities.
Nicola Childs, interim HR Director at Sheffield Forgemasters, expressed her satisfaction with the quality and diversity of this year’s applicants. She noted, “The calibre of candidates that came forward to join our apprenticeship scheme was very high this year, and we were pleased to see much greater gender diversity across applications and successful candidates.”
These newly minted apprentices join Sheffield Forgemasters at an incredibly dynamic juncture. The company has recently secured substantial investment following its acquisition by the Ministry of Defence. This newfound capital is being directed towards enhancing the firm’s capabilities to meet the evolving demands of their defense work. Additionally, Sheffield Forgemasters is actively expanding into areas such as civil nuclear and renewable energy.
As part of their growth strategy, Sheffield Forgemasters is making substantial investments over the next decade to bolster their defense-critical assets. This includes the development of a new 13,000-tonne Forge line and building, along with the replacement of 17 major machine tools within a new machining facility. These endeavors are set to establish Sheffield Forgemasters as a leader in its domain, not only in the UK but globally as well.
Nicola Childs emphasized the pride the company takes in its renowned apprenticeship program. She stated, “Our apprenticeship program is recognized as one of the best our region has to offer, and we are incredibly proud to be able to provide future generations with the opportunity to not only have a meaningful and varied career but also to develop important skills for life.”
The newly minted apprentices have secured roles across various disciplines, including machinists, electrical and control engineers, NDT technicians, methods engineers (degree), design engineers (degree), and production planning and estimating.
Emily Wynne, People Development Advisor – Early Careers at Sheffield Forgemasters, highlighted the strength of the apprenticeship program. She noted, “The strength of our apprenticeships program is growing as we continue to protect and develop our skills base for high-technology manufacturing. It’s great to welcome our latest cohort of apprentices, and as they settle in, we are already planning for our 2024 apprentice requirements.”
